READING
WITH MONTY
If your child is struggling to read, it’s often because the code of English isn’t being explained in a way that works for them.

Reading with Monty starts with the sounds of English — not the alphabet.

Children learn the 44 sounds first, then the different ways those sounds can be written.

Designed for Australian children aged 5–10 who are struggling with reading.

English uses just 26 letters - but we combine them in over 200 different ways to represent 44 sounds.
That’s where many children get confused... and fall behind.
In the video below, I'll show you how your child can quickly and easily understand how each sound can be spelt in multiple ways.

see below for more videos including demonstration videos of a Reading with Monty lesson.
Here’s what this looks like in practice.
Instead of starting by teaching children that each letter has one sound…we start with the sounds themselves - and show all the different ways those sounds can be written.

For example, the ‘sss’ sound can be spelt like this:
-
s → sun
-
c → city
-
ss → glass
-
sw → sword
-
ce → juice
-
se → sense
So instead of feeling like the rules keep changing - like when “c” says /s/ in city - children start to see patterns.
It's easy to see the spelling patterns in the colour-coded script I developed to address the exact problems I saw when teaching children to read.

When children see the patterns behind English, reading starts to make sense.
If you feel acute pain at your child's educational challenges, and observe how it impacts their whole life, you will try anything. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, I recommend giving Reading with Monty a try.

Instead of guessing, they know what to look for - and that’s when confidence builds quickly.
You can see exactly how this works inside the program I developed.
No prior phonics knowledge needed - the app guides your child, step by step.
My 8-year-old daughter absolutely loves Reading with Monty. We're mainly using it to work on her spelling, and the fact that she actually asks if she can do it says everything. She enjoys it so much that she'll even show her friends what she's doing.

Is Reading with Monty for my child?
Reading with Monty is a linguistic phonics program that was developed in response to a child who could not read simple words such as "pot" or "can". Reading with Monty may help if your child struggles with:
- phonological awareness e.g., if you ask them to say "steamboat" without the "boat" they struggle to say "steam"
- phonemic awareness (cannot delete or substitute phonemes) and/or difficulty distinguishing sounds in English e.g., they cannot replace the "a" in "cat" with an "o" to make "cot", or if you ask them to say "stink" without the "t" they cannot say "sink" or they cannot hear the difference between "ship" and "sheep" or "three" and "free"
- paying attention to individual phonemes and guesses words e.g., they may read "stream" as "steam"
- reading digraphs or trigraphs e.g., they will read "dear" as "d" "e" "a" "r" and cannot combine "ear" to make a single sound.
- swapping letters within words, reading them back to front or upside down, or confusing similar-looking letters e.g., confuses "p" and "q" or "f" and "t" or may confuse words such as "sang" with "snag"
- reading anxiety
- gamified apps that they cannot win resulting in a loss of confidence
Reading with Monty is a new app that incorporates
- decoding
- spelling
- minimal pairs
- nonsense words
Reading with Monty has been designed to be a no-frills program for struggling readers who have not responded to previous intervention. It incorporates the early learning-to-read stages of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and single-word fluency and accuracy. Reading with Monty recognizes that giving a recommended dosage and frequency is not suitable for many children who require this type of reading program. You are encouraged to determine the minimum effective dose for your child by leaving the app when your child shows signs of needing a break.
Sign up for a two-week free trial and see for yourself if Reading with Monty is effective for your child. Cancel at any time. Subscription fee of $19.99 is charged monthly. There is no yearly option. This is an Australian English program with Australian English sounds and pronunciation. It is not recommended for English speakers in other English-speaking countries.
ONE CHILD SUBSCRIPTION per adult iOS account or Google Play account. Two devices are required. They can be both iOS, both Google or one of each.
